![]() ![]() JC, like most other Northeast and Great Lakes cities, is in a rougher spot than Western and Sunbelt cities precisely because, as older cities with more industrial pollution and the legacy of white flight, we face challenges places like Phoenix or Houston don't. We have lots of industrial waste yet to clean up, hundreds of blighted buildings in need of rehab/demo, and now climate change means we'll have to build new infrastructure to cope with a warmer and wetter future.Īny municipality's expenses would increase YOY simply due to regular inflation and routine infrastructure maintenance/replacement. We also have more car and truck traffic on surface roads than in the last century, which means roads wear out faster. Much of our infrastructure is not only over a century old but it's also in critical need of replacement because previous generations either couldn't afford to repair it or didn't want to spend the money. I question your basic assumption that the cities expenses should remain staticĪgreed! They shouldn't, and they can't. Have a suggestion for the sidebar/wiki? Post get caught in the spam filter?
